M&S - character creation

For the box, we wanted to create a number of different illustrations that would reflect the theme. We didn't want it to be too stereotypical, however, we still wanted to represent Scotland. We decided to illustrate a bagpiper, a highland dancer and a caber tosser.

It was my job to illustrate all three of the individuals. I drew them out on paper first using pencil so that we could get a good idea of what we wanted them to look like.

The illustrations were then scanned in and could be digitised. Jenna used the pen tool to go round the bagpiper, and I traced the other two individuals. By doing this we were then able to live paint them and fill them with appropriate colours.

Once drawn out, we could now go on to adding colour. We explored a number of different colours that we could possibly use to reflect our theme. These specific colours didn't compliment each other, and I felt that they also didn't suit the content.

We went on to develop colour scheme further, and we also removed some of the stroke from the drawings, keeping the rest a pale grey. This colour scheme was much more appropriate than the one above, however I still feel that it is quite dull and not very fresh.

Finally, I drew up a highland cow using the pen tool, which could be added to our group of illustrations and could be included on the box.
