M&S - idea development

Now that we had our illustrations, we could go on to fully think through and develop our ideas. We had our theme, therefore we wanted to decide what items we would include within the picnic. Carrying on with our theme, we came up with a number of different food products that would be appropriate.

Idea Development

Starters/snacks - scotch eggs, crisps
Main - Lochmuir salmon sandwich, Aberdeen Angus and honey mustard sandwich
Dessert - cheese and crackers, oatcakes, teacakes, shortbread
Drinks - Highland spring water, whiskey

We then started to think about how this would fit into a picnic context, and how we could incorporate illustration onto the packaging. This is when we had the idea of creating a scene, where each product fit together like a jigsaw in order to create a 'bigger picture'.

This rough drawing displays how exactly we'd want each piece to fit together to create a Highland scene.

Template Development

Now we had the ideas for the format of our box, we needed to come up with some measurements so that we could work out how it would all fit together. We used an existing crisp packet to get a rough measurement for this, and worked around it. Each piece of packaging would have to fit the food product in, but also fit together in a box that the user could transport.

Mock Ups

To see is our measurements were correct and accurate enough, we decided to produce some mock-ups. By doing this, we could gain a better idea of how it would fit together, and see if any changes needed to be made.

Initially, we wanted to create our sandwich box to look more like a roll over bag, as we felt this added more of a modern twist to the products. However, when we fit it altogether, it became a bit distorted as it had different depths and therefore didn't fit. This meant we would have to change the crisp packet to be a standard box.
