The chosen lyric - All I want for Christmas is you.
This is evidently the main message behind the song, as well as being the title, and I felt that it would be the most recognisable and memorable section to use.
The lettering was initially drawn out by hand, so that it could be edited and digitally applied, experimenting with different possible layouts.
Experimenting with layout
As there are quite a lot of ascenders and descenders within the lyric, it was quite hard to fit it all together where it looked comfortable and not forced. For example, the below layout looked odd as there was too much spacing and white areas in certain places. It needed to fit together more snuggly, and therefore needed some development.
The 'f' was proving to be the biggest problem, as it created awkward spacing. I therefore made the decision to change it's height so that it was still recognisable but allowed the type to work more effectively. Emphasis was place on the 'you', and a slight slant was given to the overall text to give it more fluidity and movement.
Whilst the type worked as a stand alone design, I decided to invert it and see whether or not it would improve the design. As the overall piece was being riso-graphed, I felt that including a larger area of block colour might add a nicer effect to the design, making it stand out more and catch the eye.
