M&S - crafting the box

The final products that we needed to create for the brief included a picnic bag and a box. We felt that the lid of the box should be simplified, so that the scenes on the lids of the food packaging would create a 'wow factor' once opened. We also didn't want things to become too heavy and detailed. With this in mind, it allowed us to start looking at composition of the lid. We started off with the title of the picnic being the main aspect, as this was the most important piece of information we needed to get across. This looked too simple, however, and the white space was too much. We therefore experimented with framing the text using a simple decorative aspect. However, this left us with nothing in between the trees, and they looked out of place, as though the space needed filling.

To see if we could develop this design further, we added the M&S branding. Although this complimented our chosen typefaces well, it still looked out of place. We started to experiment with colour to see if this impacted the design, and we decided that the light turquoise would be our chosen colour, as it worked well with the orange type.

After experimenting with the above designs, we decided to scrap our original idea. We looked around for inspiration and decided that we would create a belly band to go round a plain turquoise box. By using a belly band, the area is much more restricted, but it also means that there will be less white space. The size of the composition is minimised and therefore we were left with less unnecessary blank areas. The same style, colour and type was brought over from the previous designs, but decided to incorporate the illustrations of the characters. We felt this was necessary as they are a main aspect of our contents and they're also extremely successful at displaying our Scottish theme. Further smaller details were then added such as a dotted border, contents and side type.
