We wanted to include a 200 word statement from each student on the course that gave a brief description of their experience of their time, focusing on what benefited them, such as the facilities and the studio space.
Firstly, we felt that this layout wasn't successful for a number of reasons. Having the student's names on such a large scale detracts from the work itself. Duncan wanted to make this publication more about the course experience, rather than creating a business card for each individual designer. We therefore felt that the image should do the talking, rather than the content.
Using a grid system, we looked at all the different ways that we could lay out the images alongside the content. As Printed Textiles is such a varied course in terms of the format and scale of the work the student's produce, we wanted to develop a grid that would cater for this. Therefore some of the images were long and thing, some were square, some offered the opportunity to zoom in on more detailed pieces - with a maximum of three images allowed.
