DIALOGUE - typography

As they designs are being screen printed and need to be in black and white, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to work with some hand lettering. As this brief was intended to be a quick turnaround, typography would be ideal for this. Something overly illustrative might not work within the medium, and type also evidently links extremely closely to the theme of dialogue and communication. I have therefore explored a range of hand lettering and the development process that each went through.

The above designs incorporate a range of different styles of type that compliment each other and work together effectively to create a striking visual. Serif, sans serif and script type was explored producing something exciting and eye catching that explored a new and inventive way of writing letters. This makes the action of sending a letter much more exciting and visually pleasing.

Allison Freund has a really interesting way of working, particularly exploring how 3D objects can be translated into flat images to produce eye catching and intriguing designs. She also incorporates a lot of hand written lettering in her work, which she develops within sketchbooks. Block white scripted type looks striking inside a vibrant border that has been crafted out of paper.

Kyle Steed's work displays the effectiveness of hand written letterforms when applied to larger scales and formats. For the brief, we are working to A3 and A2, and therefore the design will have to work to this size, filling the space using shape and fluidity.
