DR ME - flag development

For our background, we decided that we would pick up on the use of floral imagery within the song. This would work as an interesting contrast to the type, as flowers are usually seen to be quite graceful, pretty and are a symbol for many different things. As DR.ME wanted us to be quite hands on during this brief, we decided to get a bit crafty by using collage. This would allow us to create some really interesting visuals on fabric, creating a bold contrast with the solid black type.

We began this process by bringing in a whole load of magazines that we could use to cut appropriate images out of. We weren't too careful during this, as with the collage process the items don't need to be cut perfectly. We aimed to gather a range of different colours, as well as including insects, leaves and larger sections of print. Katie then scanned these individual images in.

I informed Katie of some of the easiest ways to separate each of the images on Photoshop, so that she could work with them individually to build up pattern. During this process, Katie struggled because the file was so large. I therefore suggested that she created a smaller area of collage, possibly A3, and then used this to build up a bigger pattern.

Katie then sent me over a few images so I could see how the background was developing. Below are these images.

During a mini crit, I suggested a number of things:
1. A range of individual flowers could be added to build up the pattern so that it looks less repeated
2. Try and cover the blocks of green as these stand out too much
3. Bring in more pattern so that it reaches all the way to the edge of the artboard

It was then decided that these would be effective and positive improvements. As we weren't together at the time, I went over to Katie's to collect the files as they were too large to send via dropbox. This then allowed me to work on the pattern.

How I developed the pattern can be seen below.
