HARRY RAMSDENS - fish packaging

Although I have looked at food packaging in order to gain a better visual understanding of the sector, I wanted to look specifically at packaging for fish based products as I felt that this would be more useful in terms of colour palette, logos and imagery.

True Design

This packaging uses a wooden plank texture throughout, creating a traditional fishing feel, whilst also exploring an effective contrast between the blue and the bright orange of the actual product. Simple text and imagery is used on top of the photographic background to balance out the layout. This is then carried on to create a visual identity for a restaurant, including point of sale and menus, displaying a brand that visually works as a whole.

This packaging also explores how photographic images can be used within their design. Block colour and simple text has been used on the reverse so that things don't become too busy or overcomplicated. Visually, the design is fresh and contemporary, offering an innovative and exciting way to package fish.

These product ranges show how colour can be used and changed to create effective branding. The items looks high quality and high cost due to the use of simple imagery and minimal colours. The illustrations used are effective and reflective of the contents, which is something I want to explore for Harry Ramsden's.

R Design

This packaging for Tesco uses a typical blue colour whilst creating a contrast using a salmon pink, which is also reflective of fish just not always used within it's sector. Windows and space is used to show off the quality of the product inside, whilst using illustration to create a fun and contemporary visual. The other fish products take on a more stripped back form, and are not as visually interesting as the smoked salmon. This may be because of the way the different types of fish need to be packaged in order to keep them fresh. Factors like this need to be considered in terms of design.

Shark!

These sauce products used for fish have been kept simple, playful and straight to the point. The way they have been packaged is unusual for a sauce, and therefore will catch the user's attention. It allows the customer to view the quality of the product, whilst keeping it fresh and easy to use.

Tank Design

This design is extremely contemporary, using black and white photography to give quite a cold feel to the product. As the contents of the packaging itself is white, I feel that colour on the packaging may have been a better direction to go down, as it all looks very dull and uninviting. If the fish had been salmon, however, the sharp contrast between the orange and the grayscale would have been extremely effective.
